Today is a historic day for African football.
Women participation in club football go back decades, however, this is the first time they are getting any form of recognition for it.
While there have been various women national competitions in Africa, there has never been a continental league for the women football clubs in Africa.
That has changed though and for the very first women club champions league for Africa, Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies are in the final facing off the Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
Whoever wins the final – read Hasaacas Ladies (yes, we are biased) – will forever be known as the first women football club on the continent to have won the CAF Women Champions League trophy for the first time.
However, that is not the only bragging rights on offer during tonight’s games. The national men’s team of the two countries – Ghana and South Africa – are currently litigating a case with FIFA after South Africa alleged that they were robbed when they played Ghana for the 2022 world cup qualifiers.
The current tussle between the two countries raises the stakes of the women’s club teams encounter even higher as both countries want to win this game so bad.
A win for Hasaacas Ladies will further reinforce that Ghana is the best while a win for the Mamelodi Sundowns will somehow come off as poetic justice for the South Africans.
Nonetheless, the Hsaacas Ladies are getting all the love from Ghanaians ahead of their history making game.
Westside is the best.
Break a leg, ladies.
Bring it home, ladies.
Gold is always better.
Solidly behind them too.
To the whole world!!!!
The flag has never been higher.
Best of luck to the ladies.
Hasaacas Ladies has been amazing in this campaign.
