Fredrick Mensah’s teaching career started after he completed senior high school in 2016. He attended Shama Senior High School where he offered a Business programme.
The 25-year-old was employed as a teacher under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and assigned to the Mankessim M/A ‘A’ Basic School in the Mfantsiman District of the Central region of Ghana.
At the Mankessim M/A ‘A’ Basic School, Fredrick is the class teacher for primary 1; and doubles as a subject teacher in Fantse for primary 4 and 5.
As a teacher who cares about his students, Fredrick adopted teaching methods to get his students more involved in class, and also enable them to do well academically.
Videos of the activities he engages in with his students have gone viral on Facebook and he has received praise from Ghanaians on how he makes school exciting for his students.
Explaining why he adopted these teaching methods, he said: “There is a saying that goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Naturally, I’m funny and I like to play a lot. So I realised if am able to chip in funny stuff like these it will help my students’ academic performances too. Also, the introduction of the new curriculum from the GES supports stuff like these.”
“So I crack jokes, dance, sing and even buy them snacks to motivate them when they perform well,” he added.
Fredrick also praised his students for adapting very quickly and easily to his teaching methods. “They are very sociable, disciplined, and in spite of how much I mingle with them, they respect me a lot,” he said.
Fredrick also does more than fun activities to make school comfortable for his students. On September 7, 2021, he presented school uniforms to some of his students. Fredrick received a cash donation from one of his followers on Facebook who realised that some of his students were not in school uniform in a picture he posted on the social media platform.
“For me, teaching makes me feel good and complete because I don’t just teach the kids, I also learn from them. So it is an exchange of knowledge between me and my students. And there’s also the fun part where we make each other laugh through the fun activities we do. Being a teacher makes me very happy,” Fredrick said.
In addition to his teaching job, Fredrick is also a content creator. He creates funny skits, as well as motivational and educational videos.
He hopes to continue to use the gift God has given him to train and impact the life of the students in his school as well as others in his community.
