The majority of the time, the attention is put on ladies when they attend events like weddings because most men don’t put in any major effort to stand out. At weddings, you’ll see men in the most basic outfits; a shirt tucked into trousers and dress shoes. Instead of going the boring route, you can rather invest in different styles of Agbada.
Agbada clothing is made up of four pieces, the outer robe (awosoke), the undervest(awotele), a pair of trousers(sokoto), and a hat(fila). The unique name agbada comes from the outer robe as agbada means “voluminous attire.”
Formerly, the gown-like attires were reserved for a select few, but have since become popular among Africans of all walks of life. Even some foreigners wear it proudly as a celebration of African greatness.
Like several things in Africa, the fashion trend was inspired by early visitors to Africa, in this case, Berbers and Arab merchants originating from the Middle East and Mediterranean region.
Agbada is more commonly associated with the Yoruba people of Nigeria. However, it is not limited (traditionally) to just these people.
It is vital that you select and choose a material that will fit your skin colour. There are different materials in the market for you to choose from. Every material is unique in its way and can be transformed to whatever you want it to be if you are creative. However, an inferior material will destroy your Agbada outfit.
