The first thing and probably the most important thing that you’re going to need to do when you want to turn your hobby into a business is to find some customers. This tends to be easier if you have an established social media presence. An artist who gets hundreds of likes on a new post won’t have a hard time getting some business clients out of those numbers.
Even if you’re not popular on social media, you can get your first paying customer by taking initiative. Make sure your profile looks presentable and you can send DM’s out to people that you think could use your services. Always remember to prioritize making a new client over making a new sale.
Getting Negative Feedback
One of the hardest things for a creative to take is negative feedback, especially from a customer who feels they were entitled to a better result. It can be easy to get demotivated, but you should learn to get into a mindset of learning from even the negative feedback.
There will always be more customers. You just have to make sure to stay motivated. And get second opinions from people that care about you. Critique is definitely easier to hear when you believe it comes from a place of good intentions.
Balancing Your New Business And School
Once you’ve got you’ve turned your hobby into a side hustle and have gotten a client or two, you need to be able to balance that new business with school. For some hobbies, it’s easier than for others. If you’re a makeup artist you’re hardly going to have people needing your services during class hours so that works out.
However, if your work takes more time, you might need to start keeping track of your time and making a schedule so that everything goes smoothly. You also need to be open with potential clients about how long things are going to take.
