Alex Afari: 5 Things To Know About The Agronomist Working To Transform Ghana’s Agric Sector

Alex Afari is a Ghanaian agronomist who is committed to enhancing the way agriculture is practised in Ghana.

He has become very popular on social media for the kinds of vegetables he is able to grow and harvest in his greenhouse farm – Defarmercist – which he started in March 2020.

Through Defarmercist, Alex does not only cultivate vegetables but also offers greenhouse farm management, agricultural consultancy services, input supplies, agronomic support and greenhouse production capacity building training.

Here’s are five things to know about Alex Afari:

1. He’s an alumnus of the University of Ghana

Alex Afari holds a bachelor of science degree in Agricultural Science (Post-Harvest Technology) from the University of Ghana.

2. He’s well-educated in Agriculture and Agronomy

After obtaining a degree in Agricultural Science, Alex went on to obtain a certificate in Agronomy from a greenhouse capacity building and training programme organised by Agritop. He also obtained a degree in Greenhouse and Modern Agriculture, Fram Management and Agronomy from the Agro-studies College in Isreal.

3. He’s well-experienced in Agronomy

Aside from the education he has had in agriculture and agronomy, Alex has also acquired some experience by working in organisations that are well established in the field of agriculture. He worked as a greenhouse trainer at Agritop Gh Ltd; and as a field technician at Havivian Organic Farm in Isreal.

4. He trains and advices others about farming through social media

Alex Afari mostly uses social media as a medium to advise and encourage Ghanaians to go into farming. He offers farming tips through videos on his YouTube page, as well as other platforms – Twitter and Facebook.

5. He’s an award-winning farmer

Alex Afari was awarded the ‘Best Vegetable Farmer’ in recognition of his outstanding contribution towards the development of agriculture in the Adentan Municipality, on November 6, 2020, during the 36th National Farmers’ Day.
