Seven special Ghanaian fashion students will join others selected across Africa to be celebrated for helping to use fashion to champion a social good.
The seven Ghanaian students, Leticia Ashie Owusu, Gifty Amonu Essel, Kizito Ronald Jr, Placid Leke, Anuja Bharti, Paul Akrofie, and Desmond Nhyira Amankonah from the Joyce Ababio College of Creative Design are among the few award winners, including winners from other African countries such as Zambia and Namibia.
They were chosen after submitting entries to participate in the Merck Foundation More Than A Mother Awards.
This award is being championed in Ghana with the backing of the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo.
The Merck Foundation More Than a Mother is a movement that aims to empower infertile women through access to information, education and change of mindsets.
This powerful campaign supports governments in defining policies to enhance access to regulated, safe, effective and equitable fertility care solutions. It’s all about giving every woman the respect and the help she deserves to live a fulfilling life, with or without a child.
Merck Foundation’s aim is about developing a community of “African Fashion Designers in order to catalyze a movement that reaches far beyond just fashion and creates a culture shift and be the voice of the voiceless in their communities,” said the CEO of Merck Foundation and President of Merck Foundation More Than a Mother, Dr. Rasha Kelej.
Other students who also want to participate in future awards can do so this September and October.
For the 2021 edition, all African Fashion Students can create and share designs that will deliver strong and influential messages to raise awareness about Infertility Prevention, Breaking Infertility stigma, and/or Empowering Girls and Women through Education. The deadline for submission is 30th October 2021. Click here to view more details.
