When you think the first thing that comes to mind is creating a blog. However, there’s so much more that you can do with WordPress including creating a portfolio that’s going to land you internships. Putting a link to your portfolio on your CV is a surefire way to stand out from other candidates when applying for an internship (paid or otherwise). If you’re a freelance creative, then you should already have a portfolio. Here are 8 easy steps to create a portfolio with WordPress.

Create A WordPress Account

Creating a WordPress account is where you’ll want to start. It’s also incredibly simple. When you’re signing up, you can sign up with a free account and then decide later if there are any features that you think are worth paying for.

Activate The Portfolio Feature

The next thing that you want to do is turn on the portfolio feature for your WordPress website. You can do that using these steps:

  • Go to My Sites > Manage > Settings > Writing > Content Types
  • Turn on portfolio projects and choose the number of projects that you want to display per page

Manage Your Portfolio Projects

Now that you’ve activated the portfolio feature, you can start adding portfolio projects to share with your potential employers or clients. Follow these steps to begin adding projects to your portfolio:

  • Go to My Sites > Portfolio
  • Click on add new project to open the project editor

Edit The Project

You can add images, text, videos, and various other content types to your project and then publish once you’re done. The project will now go live on your portfolio page which you can share with anyone and impress your way into that gig or internship.

Get Your Shareable Link

Getting the link to portfolio means simply putting portfolio after your site url. That becomes: http://yoursite.wordpress.com/portfolio/ and of course, replace ‘yoursite‘ with your website.

One last thing that’s worth mentioning is that although a lot of free themes on WordPress come with the portfolio feature, there are themes that are specifically made to be a portfolio. Most of those, you’ll have to buy, but boy do they look good.
