Exactly a month after taking a trip to the Ghana “Highlife Mecca of the World”, Nigerian Highlife-Duo The Cavemen have released their debut single of the year “Selense.”
Selense is a soothing mid-tempo highlife tune produced by The Cavemen, with backing guitars from Segun Adegbamigbe while the song was written by The Cavemen and Mercy Okorie.
During their visit to Ghana in an interview with Antoine Mensah, they gave credit to Pat Thomas. Pat Thomas; it’s through his music that they learned a key component in Highlife music composition, they said.
The Cavemen released their debut single, ”Osondu” in 2020 and released their debut album, Roots in August 2020. The album was recorded in their living room and was fully produced by them. They also produced 11 of the songs on Lady Donli’s Enjoy Your Life album who in turn was a co-executive producer on Roots.
Recording of their sophomore album is completed and scheduled to be released in 2021. The album is set to feature Cobhams Asuquo.
A close listen to their debut album “Roots” will immerse you in the distinctive, rich, and organic Highlife sound pioneered in Ghana in the nineteenth century. The guitar chords, progressions, harmonies, and overall arrangement are evocative of Ghana’s and Nigeria’s Golden Age of Highlife music.
