Dr Naana Boakye, a Ghanaian-American dermatologist, is responsible for formulating the ingredients for a skincare brand for melanin-rich babies founded by Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade.
The product, known as Proudly, is the first-of-its-kind sustainable baby care brand created for the needs of children who have rich skin tones.
Dr Boakye is very experienced in treating darker, melanin-rich skin tones.
Speaking on the work she did for Proudly, she said: “A moment I am exceptionally proud to stand along with Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade who launch Proudly!!! Proudly is set to be the first-of-its-kind sustainable baby care brand created for the needs of children of colour!!!… Yessss WE did this!”
“In formulating each and every Proudly product we have taken into account each ingredient that would help maintain the wellness and health of the skin barrier,” she stated.
Earlier this year, tennis star Naomi Osaka also partnered with Dr Boakye to design and specifically formulate ingredients for her skincare brand (KINLÒ) to meet the needs of darker-skinned people, especially athletes.
Dr Naana Boakye is also a lifestyle medicine physician and owner of Bergen Dermatology, where she offers a full range of cosmetic, surgical and medical dermatology services.
As a dermatologist who specializes in the health and appearance of the skin, creating products with scientifically-backed ingredients that have the ability to nurture the skin and optimize its health is Dr Boakye’s passion.
According to her, she works a bit differently than most other dermatologists because “I like to get to know my patients so we can build a long-term relationship that benefits their skin as well as their overall wellness.”
“This idea came from an ‘A-HA moment’ when I realized I could better serve my patients by casting a wider net that addressed the connection between their skin and their lives as a whole. In fact, I had started practising ‘lifestyle medicine’ well before I discovered there was a name for this integrated approach to looking and feeling good both inside and out,” she indicated on her page.
She is also the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Karité, a luxury shea butter-based skincare line she co-founded with her sisters – Abena Slowe and Akua Okunseinde. Karité products feature high concentrations of raw, unrefined shea butter and palm oil sustainably sourced directly from Ghana.
Dr Naana Boakye obtained her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Biochemistry from Wellesley College in 1999. She later obtained her Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) in Epidemiology from George Washington University and her Medical Degree (M.D.) from Temple University. She completed her dermatology residency at State University of New York Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn, New York, where she also served as Chief Resident. She also has a board certification from the American Academy of Dermatology.
In addition to her job as a dermatologist, Dr Boakye also offers telemedicine-based services in several states across the United States.
