#VGMA22: Do You Need An Album To Win VGMA Artiste Of The Year? Here’s What The Rules Say

Perhaps, a lot of people knew it or perhaps some we just knee-deep in their denial that they couldn’t see what was happening.

The Gospel Artiste of the year is also the VGMA Artiste of the Year.

Diana Hamilton took over the mantle from Kuami Eugene and she had done so in a spectacular fashion.

As the only second Gospel musician, first female Gospel musician and the only living female musician (Gospel or secular) to get this award, Diana Hamilton has etched her name in the history records.

Judging by the conversation online and the awards KiDi who was in the running for Artiste of the Year picked up last night, a lot of people automatically assumed he would be crowned the artiste of the year.

However, when it came to it, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts And Culture Mark Okraku Mantey mentioned Diana Hamilton’s name and even did so by dragging KiDi who had said earlier while accepting an award that he would be back.

Since the announcement, a lot of people have been talking about who deserves to win the category of the Artiste of the Year and whether or not Diana Hamilton who didn’t release an album in the year under review should have been crowned the winner.

This conversation is coming from years of the misconstrued assumption that one needs to have hosted their own concert and released an EP or an album to be eligible to win the category.

However, the current VGMA rules say a different thing.

“The Artiste of the Year is the Artiste(s) adjudged by the Academy, Board and the General Public as the artiste with the highest audience appeal and popularity in the year under review. The artiste(s) must have released a hit single/EP/album and must be one of the artistes with the highest nominations in the year under review,” the VGMA rules say about the category.

This means that you do not need an album or an EP to be able to win the category, as long as, you meet the other conditions.

Diana Hamilton is the VGMA Artiste of the Year and clearly, she has met the conditions and deserves all her flowers.
