Abiana: From A Backing Vocalist To Winning Best Female Vocalist At VGMA 22


Abiana won the award for ‘Best Female Vocal Performance’ at the 22nd Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), for the performance on her song Adun Lei.

Winning the award came as a surprise to her and many who didn’t know of her amazing singing talent, as she beat off competition from other amazing female vocalists including Adina (Hear Me), Cina Soul (Die 4 U), Yaa Yaa (Mmusuo), Efe Grace (Lord Have Your Way), and Enuonyam (Fill Me).

According to CNR, her journey dates a decade and over, having tried to get into a number of music reality TV shows. In 2013, she join the Afro Harmony Band as a backing vocalist and later in 2014, she joined the Hy Skuul band as a lead singer before launching her music career as a solo artiste in 2020.

Abiana started getting the attention of some Ghanaian music lovers when she featured on Okyeame Kwame’s award-winning song Bolgatanga Girl.

In October 2020, she released Adun Lei, which caught the attention of the movers and shakers of the Ghanaian music industry.

Adun Lei got her two nominations – Best Female Vocal Performance and Songwriter of the Year – at the 22nd VGMA, of which she won the former and lost the latter to Kofi Kinaata.

Abiana won the Best Photography Video award at the 4syte Music Video Awards 2021

At the 4syte Music Video Awards 2021, she won the award for ‘Best Photography Video’ for Adun Lei beating 11 others.

In addition to Adun Lei, she has two other singles: Amen, released in December 2020, and her latest Bo Nɔŋŋ Ni, released in March 2021.

Abiana calls the kind of music she does as ‘Soul Life’.

“I can sing in whichever genre I prefer, but what I really love to do. My kind of music, I call it Soul Life. It comes from deep within. From a place of both pleasure and pain. A place of laughter and tears…it comes from deep down my soul,” she said on CNR.

She has performed at many events including the VGMA 22 Xperience Concert, the maiden edition of the Entertainment Achievement Awards (EAA), the 2021 President’s Inaugural Dinner, and the much talked about performance with the Blacklace Band at the 70th birthday party for Ghana’s First lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo.

Abiana is an alumnus of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree (BSc) in Marketing. She loves to play the guitar and is signed to the +233 Record Label.
