Each year, a lot of musicians are nominated for various awards at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
This is an amazing this because it celebrates their dedicated work to music over the year under review.
Though one can argue that the nomination in itself is an award of sort, nothing beats your name being called as the best in your category on the night of the award show itself.
For most Ghanaian musicians, wining a VGMA is a career goal they strive for. Winning multiple VGMAs is just them showing off and reaffirming their status in a competitive cut throat industry.
However, while the nominations means they are one step closer to getting the award it could also mean nothing at all, especial when one fails to win even one award from their multiple nominations.
Here are some of the most epic snubs at the VGMA;
When the list of the nominations for the 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards was released, Fante Rap God, Pappy Kojo, was in a comfortable lead. He was nominated for Hip Hop/Hip Life Artiste of the year, his ‘Aye Late’ song featuring Sarkodie earned him a Best Collaboration and Best Rapper of the year nominations, including for the category of Hip Hop song of the year. However, while the awards night unfolded and one category after the other were announced it became clear that he was not taking any award home.
If Pappy Kojo getting four nominations and not even winning one was a tough pill to swallow, then what happened to Medikal the following year during the 2017 VGMA must never be talked about – yet here we are.
The maverick rapper was on fire heading into the night of the 2017 VGMAs, very optimistic that he would get at least one award. Medikal had 7 nominations heading into the night in the categories of Best Artiste, Best New Artiste, Best Collaboration with Sarkodie on the ‘Confirm’ remix, Best Rapper for the ‘Connect’ song, Afro Pop for ‘Too Risky’ with his ex Sister Deborah, among other nominations. However, Medikal went home disappointed with not a single award.
No, he didn’t have four or seven nominations, yet Patapaa’s inability to take home the award for Most Popular song during the 2018 VGMAs for his famous ‘One Corner’ song was tough for him. Going into the night he had been nominated two times.
Hip Life song of the year and Popular Song of the Year. However, Patapaa was in his feelings when Fancy Gadam and Sarkodie’s ‘Total Cheat’ won the Popular Song of the year category. He even declared that he would not be part of the VGMAs.
La Meme Gang
The all boys group La Meme also had its own major snub during the 2019 VGMAs. The group, with notable names such as Darko Vibes, RJZ, Nxwrth and others had nominations up their sleeve. Hip Hop/ Hip Life Artiste of the Year, Best Group, and New Artiste of the year.
As a young funky group, most people expected to win at least the Best Group category. However, to their shock, they were beaten to it by the Bethel Revival Choir.
One thing we know for sure is that the VGMAs is filled with a lot of drama and a lot of nominations does not guarantee a win.
