The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is arguably one of the biggest nights in the celebration of Ghanaian music.

For more than 20 years, the music awards show has led the celebration of Ghanaian music and the musicians who compose and perform them.

One night in a year, the leaders in the mainstream music scene gather to pat themselves on the back for a job well done in the year under review.

As a night to celebrate music, the VGMA always promises fun-filled entertainment with music at its centre.

However, as we have seen in the past, sometimes the VGMA drama has nothing to do with the music in particular.

Here are a few memorial moments from the VGMA;

Elikem And Pokello

In the 2014 edition of the VGMA, Ghanaian fashion designer, Elikem Kumordzie proposed to his then-girlfriend, Pokello live on stage when the two were presenting an award. The live TV proposal made headlines and gave a lot of men a tough time in finding the best way to propose.

Stonebwoy And Shatta Wale Gun Incident

At the 2019 VGMAs, a chaotic scene with Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale at the centre of it literally brought the VGMA to an end. The chaotic scenes caused by Stonebwoy holding a gun while Shatta Wale approached him on the stage brought the show to a premature end and earned them a ban from the VGMA board.

This Remembers Me

Back in 2010, Tic Tac delivered one of the most memorable lines at the VGMA. Host Chris Attoh had invited Tic Tac on stage to present an award. While welcoming him on the stage, the DJ played one of his classics. In an attempt to provide some fun fact background to the making of the music, Tic Tac uttered the now infamous words – “this remembers me.”

Kwaw Kesse And The Wheelbarrow

In 2017, award-winning musician Kwaw Kesse got a lot of people talking by pulling a major stunt. He appeared at the awards pushing a wheelbarrow containing plaques of all the awards he had ever won from the award scheme. The wheelbarrow was labelled “AWARDS FOR SALE.” After he pulled the stunt, he has not been nominated for a VGMA award.

The Patapaa Suit

After the 2018 VGMA, one photo caught everyone’s eye. It was a photo of Patapaa in a blue suit. The photo which was taken by Kuulpeeps.com went viral, and though some were trolling him and others were just happy that Patapaa also showed up.

King Promise’s Camboo

King Promise and his Balenciaga sneakers stole the show at the 2018 VGMAs. Trolled for wearing an oversized camboo while performing on the stage. One of the iconic photos of the night featuring King Promise and his camboo came from Kuulpeeps.com.

A Sarkodie Record

Sarkodie really deserves all his flowers. He burst onto the scene in 2009 and at the 2010 VGMA, Sarkodie was crowned king. As a newbie who had just won the award for Discovery of the Year award, Sarkodie went ahead to beat his seniors to win the Rapper of the Year, Album of the Year, Hip Hop/ Hip Life artiste of the Year and the biggest award of the night, Artiste of the Year. He is the only new artiste to have won Best New Artist or Discovery of the Year award to go on and win the Artiste of the Year award that same night.

VGMA Blackout

Just at the start of the 2017 VGMA, dumsor also made a grand entrance. According to the organizers, not even the standby generator had the capacity to produce give them the power they needed. There were consistent power fluctuations for several minutes. Eventually, the show started 2 hours later than the already scheduled starting time.

Shatta Wale The Artiste Of The Year

In 2014, the unthinkable happened. Not because he didn’t deserve it but because of the years of bad blood between them. The Chatter House organised Ghana Music Awards crowned Shatta Wale as the artiste of the year. The self-proclaimed dancehall King had consistently taken Chatter House to the cleaners. The award show itself was not spared in the Shatta Wale dragging. However, after they reportedly made up, he was given his due and christened artiste of the year for 2014.

Over the years, the VGMA has given us pure entertainment both on and off the stage and there is no reason why this year’s edition should be any different.
