You might have shouted his producer tag “Jae5” in a club without knowing who he really is.
Ghanaian-Britain Producer Jonathan Mensah known in the spotlight as Jae5 was born in East London, and is a producer who is widely recognized for his work with Britain Rapper and Singer,, J Hus and Britain Collective NSG.
Jae5 started producing records over 10 years ago when he moved back to Ghana, beginning his producing career. He started using Fruity Loops software to create beats that were influenced heavily by Afro Beats which is due to his Ghanaian descent and Hip hop.
In 2017, Jae5 became notable for his role in producing J Hus’ hugely successful 17-track album ‘Common Sense,’ which is certified Gold in the UK and peaked at number 6 in the UK album chart.
Jae5 is currently synonymous with the term ‘genre blender,’ fusing Afrobeats, bashment, hip-hop and pop for an infectious wall of sound that has infiltrated the scene.
Known to have upcoming artists and producers at heart, Jae5 in an interview with the BBC supports the idea that new producers need to get recognition in other ways too “You’ll hear artists like Future shout-out to his producer on every song. With the UK, it was kind of a thing where you’d hide the producer and you wouldn’t get a shout-out. We get much more love than we used to.”
His unique blend of rap production, layered minimalism and afro-beat instrumentation has won him mainstream awards (Best Producer – MOBOs 2020), nominations (Best Contemporary Song – Ivor Novello 2020; plus multiple BRIT and Mercury nods) and platinum records along the way.
This year Jae5 won a Grammy at the 63rd Grammy Award for “Bank On It” a contribution to Burna Boy’s “Twice as Tall” album.
