#AUDay: 7 Songs From Across Africa That Will Bring Out The Pride In You

Today across Africa, nations are celebrating Africa Day, the day (formerly known as African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 5 May 1963.

The organisation was later transformed into the African Union on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, but the holiday continues to be celebrated on 25 May. It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent as well as around the world.

This year’s theme of Africa Day is Arts, Culture And Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want.

With the theme focusing on Arts and Culture we have curated a list of African songs other than Ghana you can enjoy. The list is made of Sauti Sol, Sha Sha, WurlD, Ladipoe, Karun, Elaine and Zuchu.

Sauti Sol – My Everything ft. India.Arie

My Everything, tagged as the name of this track was released by the Kenyan giant artist, Sauti Sol featuring, India Arie. This track was released in the year, 2020, and also appeared as the number 9 track of his studio album titled, Midnight Train.

Sauti Sol are a Kenyan afro-pop band formed in Nairobi, Kenya by vocalists Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano and Savara Mudigi in 2005. Initially an a cappella group, guitarist Polycarp Otieno joined before they named themselves Sauti Sol.

Sha Sha – Woza

Sha Sha comes heavy with a new Amapiano entry titled Woza. The song is her first single following her breakout EP Blossom, released under the eagle eye of DJ Maphorisa of BlaqBoy.

The single shows her coming as a woman of her own after blossoming with the project. Sha Sha has since become the face of Amapiano vocals having won 2020 BET Viewers Choice Awards.

Charmaine Shamiso “Sha Sha” Mpambiro, is a Zimbabwean singer from Mutare. Hailed by many as “the queen of amapiano”, she gained popularity for her collaborations with South African dance producers such as DJ Maphorisa and Kabza de Small. She was awarded Best New International Act at the 2020 BET Awards.

WurlD – Bossy Part II Ft Erica Banks, Amaarae, Kida Kudz & Cuppy

The song is a remix of the original track featuring Cuppy & Kida Kudz that was initially featured on the deluxe edition of WurlD’s Afrosoul EP. The song foreshadows the upcoming release of WurlD’s new album, coming later this year via Platoon.

Speaking about the collaborations, WurlD said, “I love the idea of bringing different WurlDs together through the new version of Bossy. ‘Bossy Part II’ further celebrates the unapologetic, confident, beautiful woman in control with new energy. Blessed to have Amaarae and Erica Banks bring new energy to the original Version.”

Sadiq Onifade, known professionally as WurlD, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, WurlD relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue a secondary education and record music. He describes his style of music as electro-fusion. He released his debut EP Evolution in 2013.

LADIPOE – Feeling feat. Buju

Ladipoe On his new song, teams up with Spaceship Entertainment singer, Buju who delivered an addictive chorus. The song was produced by Andre. “Feeling” presents a sonic reprieve from our problems as Ladipoe raps about the need to find happiness even in the face of challenges. Life is short and the pursuit of happiness is what keeps us going. Here, Ladipoe and Buju says we should take a break, throw our hands in the air and let go.

Ladipo Eso popularly known as Ladipoe or Poe is a Nigerian musician. On 28 February 2017, Ladipoe signed a record deal with Mavin Records. He rose to prominence with the song “Feel Alright” where he got featured by SDC “Show Dem Camp”.

Karun – Catch A Vibe 

In Catch A Vibe, one begins to understand the transformative growth that comes for anyone in their 20s and how as an artist there are many questions around which road one should take. For Karun a real question was quitting and leaving music behind. Through these internal battles she ended up creating Catch A Vibe, a public service announcement that she’s back doing what she’s meant to. We are re-introduced to an artist that is making music she wants on her own terms.

Karun is an alt. RnB musician from Nairobi, Kenya who has captivated audiences since she was a teenager. Her current sound is a coalescence of RnB/soul with Afro-pop influences, inspired by artists like Bobby Mcferrin and Asa. She is best known for her song “Glow Up”, an uplifting, body-positive bop that foreshadowed the sonic direction that Karun took in The “Catch A Vibe” EP.

Karun’s music is raw and honest. She weaves her life’s experiences into her music as she goes through them, aiming to inspire young artists to walk their own path and create timeless music.

Karun has been on a journey of self-discovery and reinvents her personal style as she grows.

Zuchu – Sukari

Sukari is a love song that talks about how love is too sweet, like sugar, that you can’t get enough of it—directed by Director Kenny under Zoom Extra, a production company owned by Diamond Platnumz. Its Audio was produced by Trone, with mastering and mixing done by Producer Lizer Classic.

Zuhura Othman Soud, better known by her stage name Zuchu, is a Tanzanian singer and songwriter signed to WCB Wasafi record label. She was awarded the Silver Plaque Button by YouTube for hitting 100,000 subscribers within a week. She became the first East African female artist to reach that milestone within a week.

Elaine – Right Now

“Right Now” tells the story of a lovers tiff with Elaine choosing to spend a night out with her girlfriends instead of moping over the lover’s quarrel. Elaine is still pining over her lover, yet chooses the intimacy of friendship and bonding over a strip club outing.

Ndivhuwo Elaine Mukheli, known mononymously as Elaine, is a South African R&B singer and songwriter from Pretoria. While studying law at the University of the Witwatersrand, she self-released her debut EP Elements in September 2019.
