Andrew Asante, an international student in the United States, recently graduated from the University of Florida with a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD).
Prior to pursuing his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree at the University of Florida, Asante obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Summa Cum Laude (4.0) from the Alabama State University in 2017.
Asante hails from Nkwakaw in the Eastern region of Ghana, and according to him, he was able to realise his dream of studying in the U.S. through the help of a childhood friend.
Sharing his story on LinkedIn to inspire others, he wrote: “At the University of Florida College of Pharmacy – I came, I served, I Grew. It has been a wonderful four-year journey in pharmacy school and I am grateful to my family, friends, faculty and mentors.”
“Pharmacy school is rewarding but can be very challenging. But as Friedrich Nietzsche encouraged us: ‘He who has a why to live can bear with almost anyhow’. Find your reason to keep working on your goals and the impossible will be possible!” he added.
Asante graduated with honours including the Dean’s Excellence Award, Student Ambassador Award for outstanding service and a Leadership Professional Certificate.
Leadership and Career
Asante, before his graduation, was the President of the Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO) and the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy.
Revealing what he accomplised as President of the two associations, he stated: “I created a platform for my peers to explore careers in the pharmaceutical, healthcare and managed care industry.”
“During my presidency, IPhO grew from 50 to 101 members — 102% growth and AMCP grew from 10 to 79 members — 690% growth,” he added.
With his interest in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry, Asante has worked for Procter & Gamble, an American multinational consumer goods corporation, and Eli Lilly and Company, and an American pharmaceutical company.
He currently works as a Senior Specialist at Organon Pharmaceuticals, a wholly-owned subsidiary of American multinational pharmaceutical company – Merck.
According to him, he enjoys collaborating with diverse teams with different personalities and skills to accomplish shared goals. “I have the faculty to manage new projects, learn new skills and work in a fast-paced team environment,” he stated.
