Team Think Data, one of the teams in the maiden edition of the data hackathon competition, organized by the University of Ghana Actuarial and Statistics Society (UGASS), has emerged as winners of the ultimate prize.
The competition saw a total of ten teams compete for the much-coveted prize. The teams include Data–X, W2K, RMB, Data Pirates, Alpha Tech, Data Silicon, Team Elite, Team Datagen, Team Squash and Team Think Data.
The participants engaged in a 24-hour non-stop intense data mining and analysis contest to creatively tackle data problems and find insights from the big data available.
After a rigorous presentation by all participants in the competition and constructive critiquing of the presentation by the judges, Team Think Data were declared winners, having beaten off stiff competitors RMB and Team Datagen who came second and third, respectively.
In an interview with UniversNews, the leader of Team Think Data, Darhlilove Botchway, explained that the “resilience” of the group propelled them to victory.
He encouraged other students to partake in programs such as the data hackathon competition to enable them put into practice knowledge acquired in the class.
“This has been a very nice experience. I think every student who is into any form of mathematical or social science should partake in it because it’s actually a mind opener and when you partake in such things, it gives you the urge to go onto further opportunities that may come your way, which may be better opportunities for you,” he said.
The UGASS data hackathon competition was organized under the theme “The Role of Data in Evidence-Based Decision-Making.”
