Ghanaian musician, Yaw Tog is quickly realising that no matter how famous you become, mama is always going to keep you grounded.

Yaw Tog, whose real name is Thorsten Owusu Gyimah is an 18-year-old final year Senior High School student.

He is reading General Arts at Opoku Ware Senior High School in Kumasi.

Yaw, is currently one of the fast-rising stars in the Ghanaian music scene.

He also has a growing international appeal with the likes of GRM Daily, BET, Guardian and others falling head over heels for him and his music.

He has also gained friendship with well-known personalities such as Off White and Louis Vuitton’s Virgil Abloh, iconic musician Stormzy and others.

As an 18-year-old Ghanaian musician who only broke into the music scene last year, Yaw Tog has really done well for himself.

He is now a multiple-nominated artiste at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) with nominations in five different categories, including Best Hip Life/ Hip Hop Artiste of the Year and Best New Artiste under his belt. VGMA nominations are the biggest music nominations for artiste in Ghana.

There are musicians who are older than him and have been grinding in the music scene longer than he has and they have not achieved what he has in a short amount of time.

However, all these accolades in the music business are not nearly enough for Yaw Tog to not listen to his Mama.

As a final year student and just like any other in the country, Yaw Tog is now preparing for his final year exam.

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is the final exam for students to gain admission into various tertiary programmes of study.

With WASSCE season approaching in a few months, Yaw Tog’s fans asked him whether he will be writing the exams. However, he knows that his star power ends the moment he goes home – then mama is in charge.

He jokingly told his fans that his mother would kill him if he doesn’t write the WASSCE.

By the end of September, Yaw Tog would have completed his WASSCE and he would become an alumnus of OWASS.

From there, who knows… maybe he will pursue a degree just as Gyakie is still pursuing her degree in International Business at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
