Fast rising Ghana music star, Gyakie is becoming a global music icon right before our eyes.
Every single move she makes now is cementing her status as someone to be reckoned with in the mainstream music scene.
Her latest win is her feature on a billboard in Times Square, New York.
Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment center, and neighbourhood in New York City. The site is a major pull of people that it is regarded as the most prominent place to advertise.
This makes being featured in an advert on Times Square one of the essential career boosters ever.
That is one reason why Ghanaians are excited that Gyakie is on a Times Square advert.
The other reason is why she is there in the first place.
Gyakie is the first African to join Spotify’s new EQUAL hub. It is the streaming platforms most recent commitment to fostering equity for women in music globally.
The EQUAL Music Program is amplifying the work of women creators and fostering equity in the industry.
“I am deeply honoured to be the first African woman to be partner with Spotify for EQUAL. This is huge for so many women across the continent and the entire globe…” Gyakie wrote in a tweet.
Her fans though seemed more enthused than her and it showed in their reaction to Gyakie’s partnership with Spotify and the fact that her picture went up in Times Square.
American musician Saweetie is also on the Spotify EQUAL with Gyakie.
Saweetie reportedly represents a new class of women artists on the rise who are contributing to building equity in the industry, and her dominance as a woman in her genre speaks to our hypothesis with the EQUAL program that all types of listeners want to listen to women.
