People are ecstatic for 420 today, and despite the fact that the entire month is 420, this unofficial holiday for marijuana users is observed around the world.
While cannabis is still illegal in Ghana, lovers of the plant have always had music as a sanctuary. Marijuana is a traditional song motif in reggae, punk, and rap, regardless of genre. Countless celebrities and followers have united with the medicinal properties of a single herb throughout history.
In honor of this, we’ve assembled a list of the best songs to accompany every high.
420- Questo X Zotto
Questo’s 420 is the anthem we didn’t know we deserved. This tune features Zotto. With its trippy beat, Questo personifies smoke as a lady “See smoke Dirty dancing like a gypsy girl would you strip for me.” Zotto also did same with his verse “Mary Jane I’m in love with you you take care of me forget my flaws Alabaster got your name on it no propane I just light it up.”
Juma Mufasa -All in my head ft Kwesi Soul
In this record, Juma Mufasa sings about being high, ” So far You Know I can’t tell no lie, I’m for high I feel I fell from the Sky.”
Harmattan- Kwesi Soul, Juma Mufasa, Mealz, Tony Dickson
After teaming up on Juma Mufasa’s “All In My Head”, Kwesi Soul teams up with Juma Mufasa, Mealz, Tony Dickson on “Harmattan” off Kwesi Soul’s “Soul Town” project. Harmattan is a song about Kush and how music has them feeling alive despite feeling broken.
Green Means Go- Pappy Kojo X $pacely X Phyno
Off his latest Album, Pappy Kojo features RJZ, and Phyno where they sang about the high you get from smoking pot in this song. The song is a jam, so here’s what was sung in the chorus if you didn’t know: “We’re up, roll me one, on rotation pass the plant// We get high, have some fun, see my vision…”
Ayisi – Mary Jane
Before he gave us “wherever the party dey we step clean”, he sang a beautiful ode to a perfect someone(thing) called Mary Jane and if you don’t pay attention to the lyrics, you’d think it’s a love song. In his defence, it definitely is a love song because he “gets high off your loving.”
Yaa Pono – Highgrade
The super talented rapper did not mince words or try to soften things up, but that hook was as raw as it could get: “mep3 s3 mehyi wee.”
Samini ft Mugeez – Trigga Riddim
This was a good refix of the popular Samini song, Trigga. On this new version, Mugeez and Samini sang about weed and every reason why it should be legalized. “Marijuana is the healing of the nation.”
Kelvynboy ft Medikal – Loko
This was on Kelvynboy’s Perfect EP and featured Medikal (Medikal’s verse has us excited every time!) The two talked about the effects of marijuana and the video had some subtle hints and was pretty fun to watch.
