Nigerian make up artist, Jane Richard has become popular for transforming her face to that of celebrated personalities including Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, Eddie Murphy, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West and others.
Jane, 23, studied Microbiology in university but loves being a makeup artist. According to her, she started makeup artistry about two years ago but became more consistent in 2020 due to COVID-19.
“We were on lockdown and I couldn’t go anywhere and I couldn’t attend to other jobs. So I just picked up my make up tools rather than being idle at home and I started exploring on my face,” she told BBC Africa.
Jane Richard went viral on June 26, 2020, after she posted photos of her imitation of President Muhammadu Buhari on Instagram.
“When I saw my make up trend online I was really thrilled. I got so many calls and I saw my pictures on so many blogs. I got really really high recommendations from people and it made me continue to do the work.”
Since then she has gone on to imitate other Nigerian and international personalities.
Another personality Jane was applauded for imitating was American actor Chadwick Boseman. Boseman died on August 28, 2020, as a result of complications related to colon cancer.
“When I heard about his death, I was really touched. And I decided to do something in remembrance of him,” she said.
Jane reveals that it takes about three hours to create a complete look.
Explaining the process, she said: “Before I start painting a picture actually, I look at the similarities I have with that particular picture and if I don’t have the exact similarities with them I just try to see if I can manipulate those pictures they have into my face with makeup.”
However, she does not get it right all the time.
“Not all actually goes well. I have done some like that of Phyno’s and I couldn’t get it right because he is more light-skinned than I am,” she said.
