Ghanaian-American basketball player, Selom Mawugbe just ended his rookie season in the NBA G League with the Santa Cruz Warriors (the G League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors).

The 22-year-old was selected by the Santa Cruz Warriors in round two of the 2020/21 NBA G League draft as the 21st overall pick. Prior to being drafted, he played in NCAA Division 2 for the Azusa Pacific University, where he majored in Biology.

The 6-10 centre had an amazing rookie season in the 2020/21 G League. He averaged 5.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game, playing 12 games with the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Mawugbe set his season-high with 12 points in 20 minutes against the Erie BayHawks on March 2, 2021, grabbed a season-high 9 rebounds in 25 minutes against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on March 6, 2021, and dished a season-high 6 assists in 32 minutes against the Oklahoma City Blue on March 06, 2021.

Selom Mawugbe really enjoyed his rookie season in the G League and he shared with Kuulpeeps his experience playing in the G League, playing alongside the veteran Jeremy Lin and Jordan Poole, and his goal for next season:

How he felt after he was drafted:

“When I was first drafted I felt immense excitement and gratitude for the opportunity, followed by a focus on what I need to do to be successful at this new level.”

His motivation going into his rookie season:

“My motivation was my love for the game and desire to improve through the use of the coaches, teammates and other resources made available to me.”

His G League experience:

“It was a lot of fun, it was a feeling of accomplishment to be playing with such talented guys. It spurred on me a renewed spirit of competition to not just be there but work to be one of the best.”

His experience with Santa Cruz:

“Our whole team really was surprisingly very close, both as a result of the bubble but because we had a great group of men and women from coaches to players to training staff and other staff members. It definitely translated to the court as well.”

Playing alongside veteran Jeremy Lin:

“Jeremy Lin has such a vast knowledge of the game with the many years he’s spent playing in the league. It was a phenomenal experience because he was so willing to help and share what he knew and thought. I was able to learn a lot from him both on and off the court but I think the most important thing was the role faith in Christ plays in his life and in mine, as well as, the importance of enjoying the journey both good and bad that comes with it instead of solely fixating on the destination which for all players in the G League is the NBA.”

His take on Jordan Poole:

“From playing with JP [Jordan Poole] I was incredibly impressed with his shot-making and finishing around the rim. It’s no surprise to me he’s putting up the numbers he is now on the [Golden State] Warriors. I’m incredibly excited for him and hope he continues to display the great player he is, the hard work he puts into his game and the love for playing he has.”

His goal for next season:

“My plan is always to improve and add to my game and that is what I’ll be focused on. Not sure where I’ll play next but one thing is for sure and it’s that I’ll be ready when the time comes. With that being said the goal will always be NBA.”
