(Left) The alleged fake Yaa Asantewaa photo. (Right) The reported true photo of Yaa Asantewaa

In the Ghanaian political history and the in the history of the Asantes, one figure often stands taller than most.

This person, who is revered is often celebrated for standing up to the powerful British colonial authorities in ways that others were not willing or perhaps afraid to do.

Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the late Queen mother of Ejisu, is the gracious fierce leader immortalize in the Ghanaian political history for standing up to the British army when the men were afraid to do so.

Her courage has now made the name Yaa Asantewaa synonymous to bravery.

For years, we have all seen the black and white photo of a gun-wielding woman clad in a bulletproof military uniform.

We were told, that was Yaa Asantewaa.

However, most of us had the shock of our lives when a Twitter handle called Ashanti Kingdom said the famous black and white photo was not actually Yaa Asantewaa, instead it was a photo of an American theatre student playing the role of Yaa Asantewaa.

Understandably, the reactions were vicious.

There is so much we need to unpack and unlearn.
