Pinamang Genfi and Melissa Dufie Boateng

International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world on March 8, of every year. As a focal point in the movement for women’s rights, the purpose of the Day is to uphold the achievements of women, recognise their challenges, and focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Choose to Challenge”, entreating women all
over the world to believe that “from challenge comes change.”

With this in mind, Hashtag Creative Shop has highlighted two Ghanaian women – Melissa Dufie Boateng and Pinamang Genfi – who are excelling in the fashion industry in Ghana by overcoming the challenges that they faced when starting their businesses.

The stories of Pinamang and Dufie is aimed at inspiring other young women to step out of their comfort zones and also start their own businesses, face the challenges that will come, eventually overcome the challenges and crown it all with excellence.

Pinamang Genfi

Pinamang is the founder of TAAG Fashion (a women’s shoe line) and Marshmallow Gifts (a gift concierge service). She is an alumnus of Ashesi University, where she studied Business Administration.

Her decision to pursue a career in fashion was sparked by her interest and love to design, create and being excited about anything that involved art.

“I started TAAG because, for as long as I can remember I’ve been interested in fashion, and always wanted to have a career in the industry,” explained Pinamang, who designs all the shoes her shop stocks.

“Marshmallow Gift concierge, on the other hand, was actually supposed to be just a summer project I worked on after school, and nothing more. However, working on it, my interest grew and I saw potential in it, so I decided to build a business out of the idea,” said Pinamang in the interview.
