Cardi B has dropped off her latest single, “UP.”
Clocking in at just under three minutes, the new cut hears the South Bronx-raised rapper formally announce her return with a series of proud and empowering bars. The song also arrives with an accompanying music video directed by Tanu Muino that sees her and her group dancing to the unfettering number.
“UP” marks Cardi B’s first release of the year and serves as the second single of her upcoming album after “WAP” with Megan Thee Stallion. It also arrives following the premiere of her Uber Eats Super Bowl LV ad with Wayne’s World.
Cardi is evidently taking her time to drop her Invasion of Privacy followup, and previously stated that she refuses to succumb to the industry pressure of consistently releasing new material. “If you don’t have a super crazy smash, it’s like ‘oh, you flop, flop flop.’ The song could be like two-times platinum, and it’s still flop, flop, flop. You’re always under pressure, and I feel like it’s not fair,” she said. “I feel like there’s male artists who go two years without putting a fcking song out, and they don’t go, ‘Oh, you’re irrelevant. It’s over for you.’ Me, I didn’t put out songs for nine months, and it’s like, ‘Oh, she’s irrelevant. She’s over. She’s a flop. We told you that.’ That type of sht started to get to me, like crush me.”
She added, “I feel like I’m not gonna let that shit get to me to the point that I’m gonna put out a song that I’m not really in love with just ’cause.”
