Dr Kwaku Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, has suggested the re-introduction of the schools under trees concept to help curb the spread of COVID-19 in schools.

According to Dr Afriyie, who is also the Minister-designate for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, research shows that it is better for classes to be conducted in open-air spaces than in classrooms in the fight against the virus.

“I’m suggesting that as far as possible, schools should be organized under trees now because the body of empirical evidence suggests that when you stay in non-enclosed spaces, you don’t get infected and that knowledge must be put to good use,” he said in Parliament.

The statement made by Dr Afriyie did not please some Ghanaians, as they took to social media to express their disappointment.

According to some of the reactions we have sighted, the suggestion to re-introduce schools under trees is not the best and they urged the government to put in place “modern measures” to help curb the spread of the virus in schools.
