There have been reports that the COVID-19 virus has changed its genome and that there is a new variance.

These new variances that were confirmed in South Africa, the United Kingdom and Brazil are said to be more infectious and presents severe symptoms among young infected patients.

In his address today, President Akufo-Addo said these new variances are now in Ghana and there is a community spread of this variance.

A community spread means people with no travel history are contracting this new variance.

“We should understand that our current situation could get very dire if efforts are not made, both on the part of government and by you, the citizenry, to help contain the virus,” President Akufo-Addo.

This suggests that the community spread of these new variances could be behind the surge of COVID-19 infections in the country.
