The Week Ghana Says Fare Thee Well To Former President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings

The late Former President Jerry John Rawlings

The first President of the fourth Republic of Ghana, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings is going to rest this week.

Ghanaians are joining his family and close friends to bid him farewell after he passed away last year from a short illness.

Former President JJ Rawlings, who succefully overthrew two governments, have been a divisive figure in the country.

As many that adored and admired him, there are arguably an equal number of people who loathed him and largely blamed him for the ills committed by military officers while he ruled and carried out coups.

What cannot be denied though is his charismatic character and his ability to roll up his sleeves and get into the trenches with ordinary men and women doing laborious work.

This week, there have been a number of planned activities to mark his final funeral rites.

This includes two days of laying in state – starting today- to give government officials and the everyday Ghanaian the opportunity to pay their respects to a man who will never be forgotten in the body politic of this country.

Yesterday, a Requiem Mass and a vigil were held in his honor.

Taking center stage in the funeral activities is his widow, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and their children.
