Tom King, goalkeeper for EFL League Two side – Newport County AFC, has broken the record for the longest goal scored in a competitive football match, according to Guinness World Records.

The goal, which he scored against Cheltenham Town on January 19, 2021, covered an incredible distance of 96.01 m (105 yards).

King kicked the ball from his own six-yard box, and it was picked up by the wind and soared into the net just out of opposition goalkeeper Joshua Griffiths’ reach.

The previous record, held by former Chelsea and Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic (Bosnia), stood for seven years before King’s goal.

Begovic, on November 2, 2013, scored for Stoke City against Southampton with the goal covering a distance of a 91.9 m (100.50 yards).
