Lionel Messi was shown the first red card of his Barcelona career after he made a challenge on an Athletic Bilbao player in the Spanish Super Cup final.
Barcelona lost the game 3-2 to Bilbao. Inaki Williams scored the winner in extra time, following a brace by Antione Greizmann for Barcelona and goals from Oscar de Marcos and Asier Villalibre for Bilbao in regular time.
As Barcelona searched for an equaliser in the last minutes of the game, Messi played a pass and took a swing at Bilbao’s Asier Villalibre as he [Villalibre] ran across his path.
The referee missed the incident, but his attention was drawn to it upon a VAR review, and he showed Messi a straight red card for his conduct.
It was the first red card the Argentine has ever received as a Barcelona player, coming in his 753rd appearance for the club.
However, it was not the first red card of Messi’s career.
He has been dismissed for Argentina on two occasions, including famously on his international debut, which lasted just a minute before he was sent off as a substitute.
His other red card came in the 2019 Copa America third-place play-off, when he was dismissed while serving as captain of his side. Despite his absence, Argentina won 2-1.
