Getting wrinkles is a normal part of aging but sometimes, your habits increases its appearance making your skin age prematurely. A lot of times, our lifestyle and environmental factors takes a toll on our physical appearances. Here are 5 causes of wrinkles that have nothing to do with old age.
1. High Sugar Diet
Eating a high sugar diet will wreak havoc to your skin. When sugar is ingested, it goes through a process called glycation which is basically, sugar binding to collagen and elastin and weakening them. This leads to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
2. Not wearing sunscreen
Both UVA rays, which penetrate the skin’s deepest layers, and UVB rays, which cause sunburn, can lead to premature aging and wrinkles. Wearing the appropriate amount of sunscreen prevents premature wrinkles and skin cancer in the long run.
3. Not getting enough sleep
Getting enough sleep is important for your health. Cortisol (the stress hormone) levels naturally decrease as you sleep. This allows your skin to go through a natural repair cycle to recover from the day’s stress. You need to get the required 6-8hrs of sleep. It’s called a “beauty sleep” for a reason.
If you’ve been wearing old glasses and you still can’t see, it might be time to get your new ones. If you’re supposed to be wearing glasses but for some reason, you prefer to squint, this might be the cause of your premature wrinkle. The more you squint, the more muscle movements are required and this in turn causes the skin cells to be squeezed and wrinkles to form. Excessive squinting will, therefore, lead to deeper wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity.
5. Dehydrated skin
It is important to keep your skin moisturized. Use skincare products with hyaluronic acid and other humectants to attract water molecules like a magnet and keep the skin hydrated and happy.
