Hiphop is expanding here in Ghana and we are totally here for the new sounds.
Calaiss, (pronounced kuh-lays) is a new Ghanaian artiste making her debut with her first Hiphop single, ‘Dis Side’.
My favourite thing about the song which easily made its way into my morning playlist is the fact that a lot of thought was put in the song and can easily be relatable to the huge chunk of young people on social media joking about “life being hard” when they are actually going through it.
For me, “Dis side” is like a quick ‘therapy session’ with a minimalistic production and melody.
The artiste starts by letting you know she’s been through it… “can’t count the number of times I died inside” but, she is healing and doing better. She continues by telling us how she keeps a balance in this crazy world of adulting, making time for things that matter, like family (“chasing dreams, I still make time for the family”). She ends with the hook, (definitely my favourite part of the song) where she offers advice to anyone who can relate, in a few lines of the song: “flick the dead weight…keep your knuckles tight…do your dance ay”
Dis Side is a bop. It’s the perfect song to just vibe to and the lyrics do a great job at giving you that daily dose of vim.
