Chelsea have joined the race to sign Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Ballague.

The Blues are thought to be “in the equation” if the Argentina international leaves Camp Nou, with his current contract set to expire next summer.

Manchester City have also been strongly linked with Messi, who handed in a transfer request following Barca’s disastrous 2019/20 campaign.

The 33-year-old was on the brink of leaving Barcelona this summer but instead decided to see out the remainder of his contract which expires in 2021.

In August, he reportedly sent a fax to Barcelona asking the club to allow him to activate a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave on a free transfer.

However, Messi’s decision to leave the club hit a snag when Barcelona indicated that he can only leave if his €700 million release clause is met, and this stand by the Barca board was been supported by La Liga.
