Twitter Announces Relaunch Of Verification Badge

Twitter has just announced that it will be bringing back its blue badge. The company’s verification process is expected to relaunch in early 2021, with brand new policies for users looking to add that checkmark next to their handles.

News of this came out via Twitter’s blog. Besides unveiling the rough launch date, the company is also “asking the public to share feedback on a draft of [the badge’s] new verification policy.” Twitter states that “calling for public feedback has become an important part of [the] policy development process” — efforts to ensure that the platform remains as an “open service” where policies “reflect the voices” of its users. But if no changes to the upcoming verification policies are made, Twitter could be opening up eligibility to companies, brands, nonprofits, news media accounts, government accounts, entertainment, sports, activists, organizers and various other entities. Twitter also outlined some of the ways verified badges could be taken away, like if a user changes his/her handle to one that would mislead people on the person’s true identity.

Twitter is planning to finalize its new policies by December 17.
