No matter how healthy your scalp and hair are, once you’re always trying to lay your edges and wanting them to be sleek every single time, it will put a strain on it. The hair around the hairline is finer and more fragile than the hair strands throughout the rest of the scalp and so they should be treated with care otherwise your hairline will end up being bald. If you’re having issues with your edges, here are 6 habits to adopt to allow them grow back.
1. Stop wearing tight protective styles
You know those hairstyles that don’t make you sleep well for 2 weeks because they’re too tight? Yes, those! Avoid hairstylists who braid like that otherwise you’ll end up with sores on your head. They also put too much pressure on your edges and end up damaging them. When you’re ready to remove the hairstyle, you’ll end up removing your edges as well.
2. Leave the baby hairs alone
Stop trying to lay them every chance you get and let your hair breathe! Stop with all the gels and the creams and the mousses and let your hair relax. They are called baby hairs for a reason; they aren’t strong enough to handle all the stress every single day.
3. Moisturize your edges
Dry hair results in breakage so if your edges keep breaking off, chances are it’s because they are dry. Make sure you hydrate your hair with water and add the oil of your choice daily.
4. Massage your edges
Use the oil of your choice and massage your edges 4 times a week. Massaging the scalp stimulates blood circulation to the scalp and promotes hair growth.
5. Wrap and protect your edges at night
You need to make sure that when sleeping, the satin bonnet you’re using actually covers and protects your edges at night. Friction between your hair and cotton pillowcase can cause your edges to break off.
6. Deep condition regularly
Deep conditioning penetrates the hair shaft and helps to restore the natural shine to the hair. Make sure you focus on your edges more when deep conditioning so they get the needed strength to grow longer and stronger without breaking.
