The country is gearing up for the 2020 General Election.

While the political debate is picking up, it is not lost on us that we are still living through a pandemic which is as serious and dangerous as ever.

Typical of our previous elections, a lot of people will be joining queues to cast their ballots – this can have the potential of spreading COVID-19 infections.

As a measure to curb the spread of the virus and prevent the election from becoming a COVID-19 mega spreader event, the Electoral Commission is taking steps to address this.

For starters, all polling stations will have a person designated as COVID-19 ambassador.

That person’s job, according to Dr Serebour Quaicoe of the Electoral Commission, will be to ensure that all COVID-19 safety protocols are followed, including social distancing rules.

Temperature will be taken, voters will be asked to wash their hands at the polling stations and wearing of face masks will be ensured until when it would be required to be removed for verification purposes.

Ghana currently has 1,472 active cases of COVID-19 in the country.
