The number of work calls that most of us have taken in 2020 are probably more than the number of work calls that we had taken in our entire lives before this year. And because of the sheer number of calls that we take, there are some things that you can’t help but hear all the time.

Here are some common things that you’re going to hear on work calls, and what the people who say them actually mean.

Can You Hear Me?

Whenever someone new starts talking and the call gets silent (usually because everyone is listening, or doing their own thing), the person speaking gets paranoid, starts feeling like they’re talking to themselves and has to ask if everyone can hear him/her.

Honestly, it can get very comedic after some back and forth ‘yes, I can hear you’ and then getting another ‘can you hear me?’

Nothing From Me

When you’re in an in-person meeting, everyone can tell when you’re not paying attention. But over a work call, you can zone out and then come back with a solid “nothing from me”, whenever you’re addressed directly.

Sounds Good

Whenever a meeting is running and everyone keeps making sensible contributions, you can say this so that no one can accuse you of not contributing to the meeting. And then there’s also the fact that ‘sounds good‘ makes you feel like a very confident, professional person.

I Didn’t Know I Had Muted My Mic

Some people get called to speak and then there’s silence on their end for a full two minutes. Finally, you find out that they were talking the whole time but their mic was muted. Frankly, I can’t even tell if this is a gig or a thing that actually happens.

If you’re even thinking about asking your boss for a raise, then you better unmute that mic and get your laugh on whenever they crack a joke. It can feel a bit weird unmuting your mic just to laugh. But look at it this way, if no one if no one did that, meetings would be so dry.

Have A Good Weekend

Remember the feeling that you used to get on our day back when you were in primary school? When you say this at the end of a meeting, you get a similar feeling.

What is one of the things that you enjoy saying on work calls? Tell us in the comments below.

Oh … and have a good weekend.
