Thomas Partey has revealed that he aims to emulate Michael Essien’s outstanding career during his time in England.
Partey joined Arsenal on transfer deadline day for £45 million after featuring for Atletico Madrid for five years.
In an interview with Arsenal.com, Partey described Essien as a fantastic midfielder.
“He’s a fantastic midfielder. He fights for every ball, he’s a great legend. For me, he’s one of the best midfielders that we’ve ever had in Africa,” he said.
Michael Essien joined Chelsea from Lyon in 2005 for £24.4 million. During his nine years at Stamford Bridge, Essien won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, a League Cup and a Champions League trophy.
“I think we’ve all seen what he has done at Chelsea, what he has done for the Black Stars and for me, he’s my idol,” Partey added.
“I grew up watching Michael Essien, Muntari, the Ayew brothers – they are the people I look up to and they made a lot of impact on Ghanaians. I think this is my moment and I have to make sure I take it.”
