Sometimes, music literally moves you. You hear some songs and you connect with it so much that you FEEL it. It might be the production, might be the lyrics…sometimes it’s just the whole delivery that makes it extra special. These songs aren’t what most people call traditional gospel songs but sometimes, they just fill you with an overwhelming feeling that makes you connect with a higher being.
When people say music is a spirit…these songs are the reason why!
DJ Khaled – Holy Mountain
My favourite song off DJ Khaled’s Father of Asahd. He featured some of the finest reggae/dancehall artistes… Buju Banton, Sizzla and Mavado. He also got hiphop artiste 070 Shake to sprinkle some fire in the chorus. Holy Mountain just feels spiritual. The intensity with which the artistes sing about their struggle, their success, life… the production and effects…it’s inspiring.
Phronesis – Blessing
The emerging Ghanaian dancehall artiste did not hold back on this song. Just as the title suggests, Phronesis offers hope to anyone listening that no condition is permanent and a time will come when everything is going to be okay.
Stonebwoy – Le Gba Gbe
I do not understand a word on this song but you hear it and then you start feeling emotional. There’s some pain Stonebwoy conveys in his verse when he starts that makes you think of your struggle and your journey.
Camidoh – Hot Pursuit
Another song in Ewe I barely understand but totally feel is a prayer. Of course, Camidoh sings some words in English that makes you know he’s feeling grateful despite the negative energy he’s been fed with but the delivery and everything on a whole…highly spiritual!
Worlasi – Pawa
It’s interesting how this song actually critiques religious leaders and how some of them are basically using people’s gullibility fuelled by faith to rob them but… it still gives me that spiritual vibe I’m talking about. This song can be your morning devotion to set you right for the day.
Nasty C – Eazy
First time I heard this song, I kept it on repeat for the longest time. Nasty C may have been bragging about where hardwork and consistency has brought him but for me, it pushes me to celebrate my small wins and work harder. The production style and delivery makes it a perfect “morning prayer.”
Stormzy – Blinded By Your Grace
This song from Koffee about the Lockdown resonates with me heavily because it makes you think… after the COVID-19 pandemic, wassup? If you lost a lot during the lockdown and are still figuring out how to pick things back up, this song should hit you smack in the chest.
Trigmatic – My Life remix
Definitely the most spirit-filled song on this list. Ayisi, Worlasi, Trigmatic and Manifest poured their emotions into the song and if there’s anything this song does, it puts you in a reflective mood.
Shatta Wale – My Level
With this song, the only way you’d understand what I’m talking about is to see Shatta Wale fans sing this song at a concert. The passion, the emotions… you can tell every lyric hits and reflects what every young person really just wants
