Akwasi Frimpong has announced that he will be joining the Russian National Skeleton team at their training camp in Sochi to prepare towards the Winter Olympic Games at Beijing in 2022.
“I am beyond excited to announce I will be joining the Russian National Skeleton team on my road to Beijing 2022. Training with Russia will help me continue my dream of representing and inspiring others to achieve their dreams,” he tweeted.
He added: “While training with the Russian skeleton team does not guarantee I will make it to the 2022 Olympic Games, working with top-level athletes and coaches in the world could make the difference in improving my athletic skills so I can better qualify for the Olympics.”
Akwasi Frimpong is the first athlete to represent Ghana in Skeleton Racing.
He won his first international skeleton race during the 2020 USA Western Regionals in ParkCity, Utah.
He formed a national governing body in Ghana to compete at the Winter Olympics and has also helped athletes in other African nations, such as Nigeria and Togo.
Frimpong finished last at Pyeonchang 2018 but is hopeful that a period of training with the Russian team will help him improve at Beijing 2022.
