Since Tuesday, when Nigerian army officials shot at unarmed peaceful protesters at Lekki, Lagos, Instagram has been blocking End SARS posts.
Social media users who were posting the gory scenes from the incident at the Lekki toll gate were told by Instagram that they were posting fake news and their posts were subsequently blocked.
However, Instagram has apologized saying their system incorrectly flagged “content in support of End SARS and marking posts as false.”
“We are deeply sorry for this,” Instagram said in a tweet.
It went on to make an assurance that the problem has been fixed while also apologizing “for letting our community down in such a time of need.”
Hours after the horrible incident, Nigerian army described all the headlines about the shooting at Lekki toll gate as “fake news.”
It is unclear whether that had an effect on Instagram’s earlier decision to mark the posts as false.
