The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on the Nigerian Security Operatives to exercise restraint and act professionally in handling the #EndSARS protests in Nigeria.
This call from ECOWAS comes after some unarmed protesters were reportedly shot at by the Nigerian military at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos on Tuesday evening [October 20, 2020], leaving many injured and some reported dead.
In a statement signed by H.E. Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, the President of ECOWAS, the Commission also urged protesters to remain peaceful in the conduct of their demonstrations.
ECOWAS further urged the Nigerian government the Nigerian youth, and the civil society to “urgently pursue dialogue for an early and amicable resolution of this social unrest and maintain the Nigerian image as a bastion of law and order.”
