A student of the University of Cape Coast, identified as Fidel Osei, has reportedly been arrested for “reporting an alleged robbery attack on campus.”

There were reports from the university on Monday night [October 12, 2020], alleging that a robbery attack had occurred on campus involving men armed with knives and guns who took the belongings of some of the students.

The issue took over Twitter that very night, resulting in the hashtag #UCCLivesMatter and other related terms trending.

Later on Tuesday, both the Central Regional Police Command and the Management of UCC issued statements debunking the reports of robbery attack on the students on campus.

Fast forward to Thursday, reports have emerged on social media alleging that a Fidel Osei – a former UCC SRC PRO, student activist and blogger – has been arrested for a report he did on the alleged robbery attack.

A statement that we sighted on Twitter read:

“Under the Authority of Managemnet (Vice Chancellor), the former P.R.O has been arrested and sent to the Central Regional Police Command on wrongful charges of spreading fake news.”

“Students being robbed and raped and when we draw attention of management, this is what they can do.”

“Free Fidel or we show the power of unity of students.”
