Amid protests against police brutality in Nigeria, and Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) in Namibia, women in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are also protesting and demanding justice for historic murders and rapes committed in the east of the country.

According to The Guardian, protests were held on Thursday, October 15, 2020, and they were led by women in four cities across the DRC.

Some of the protesters were reportedly beaten by police in Kisangani, one of the cities, as they marked a decade since the UN documented hundreds of crimes in DRC between 1993 and 2003 that have not been prosecuted.

The current happenings in the DRC have been described as a “silent holocaust”, as millions of people are reportedly being killed “so the western world can benefit from the country’s natural resources.”

The Central African country reportedly has the largest reserve for coltan – a dull black metallic ore from which are extracted the elements niobium and tantalum. Coltan is reportedly needed by top tech companies because ‘tantalum’ from coltan is used to manufacture tantalum capacitors which are used for mobile phones, personal computers, automotive electronics, and cameras.

Due to this, countries like the USA, UK and France are allegedly providing financial and military aid to Uganda and Rwanda to invade the regions with coltan reserves, and in the process, millions of civilians get killed.

The multinational mining companies that have been created to mine coltan are also reportedly enslaving men, women and children to mine the natural resource. These people are reportedly tortured, starved, raped and killed.

Like the protests in Nigeria and Namibia, the protest in DRC has also found its way to social media, as people are using the hashtag #CongoIsBleeding to create more awareness about the issue, as well as, condemning the happenings and African leaders who have been silent on all that has been happening on the continent.
