Gaming Commission Bans Celebrities From Advertising Betting Products

Ghanaian celebrities have taken another blow in their finances.

This comes after the Gaming Commission of Ghana banned the use of celebrities to advertise betting products in new guidelines on advertisement.

As part of the guidelines, the commission expressly said “operators shall not use celebrities in their advertisements to entice the general public to gamble.”

Though the guidelines suggest that they cannot be seen in the advertisement, it did not state whether celebrities can post adverts on their social media platforms.

Recently, celebrities such as Nadia Buari, Yvonne Okoro and others have posted video adverts of betting products on their social media platforms though said celebrities did not appear in those adverts.

However, Shatta Wale and Wendy Shay were recently featured in an advert by a betting company.

The new guidelines also sought to protect children by banning advertisement of betting products near schools, on prime time radio and television among others.

They also asked the companies to not portray bet winners as wealthy in their adverts.

This new celebrity ban follows the FDA ban on celebrities used to promote alcoholic products.
