Shatta Wale has released a song titled FvckSARS, aimed at condemning police brutality in Nigeria.
Nigerians have been protesting and demanding their government to ban all activities of a unit of the Nigerian Police Force known as Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), after the group were accused of abusing citizens.
The protests by Nigerians on the streets on their country and social media, with support from the international community, forced the Nigeria Police Force to dissolve SARS.
Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police, announced on Sunday that SARS has been dissolved in all the State Police Commands of the country.
However, it appears the message has not trickled down to SARS operatives on the ground as multiple reports keep coming in about the prevalence of their activities.
Shatta Wale in his song urged Africans to support Nigerians in their fight against police brutality like they did when the Black Lives Matter campaign was trending.
“Black lives need to matter to black people. It’s time Africans make Africa’s matter their matter,” the dancehall artiste said in Tweet after releasing the song.
“It’s sad we need a special orientation of the mindset!” he said in another tweet.
The message in his song was well received by Ghanaians and Nigerians. The title of the song also inspired a new hashtag on social media in addition to the ones already being used to condemn the operations of SARS in Nigeria.
