The Los Angeles Lakers have dedicated their 17th NBA Championship in honour of their legend Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in January 2020 alongside his daughter Gianna and seven other people.
The Lakers beat the Miami Heat 106-93 in Game 5 of the 2020 NBA Finals to lift their first NBA title since 2010.
Interestingly, Kobe Bryant, who is a five-time NBA Champion, led the Lakers to their last NBA Championship in 2010.
Bryant’s memory has been a motivating force for the Lakers since January, and that spurred them on to win the NBA title even though they faced some challenges along the way.
Prior to winning the Finals, the Lakers occasionally wore Black Mamba jerseys in honour of Kobe Bryant. They had never lost in the jerseys until Game 5.
After their victory, LeBron James and Anthony Davis spoke about winning the NBA Championship for Kobe Bryant
Vanessa Bryant also rembered her late husband and daugther Gianna after Lakers won their 17th NBA Championship.
She posted a photo of Kobe Bryant and Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka to her Instagram story.
“Congratulations Uncle P! Congratulations Lakers Kobe was right RP!… ‘stay the course- block out the noise'” Vanessa Bryant wrote.
She added: “Wish Kobe and Gianna were here to see this.”
