Thomas Partey has been in the news and continues to dominate the headlines of some of the world’s biggest football news portals after his move to Arsenal from Atletico Madrid.

The Sun, a tabloid in the United Kingdom, in an article stated that Partey rose to the top in world football from “a poverty-stricken existence in Ghana.”

Other UK tabloids including The Mirror and Daily Mail also indicated in their headline that “Partey journeyed from poverty-stricken childhood to Arsenal’s midfield”

These statements were not received well by Ghanaians on social media as they criticised the tabloids and indicated that the statements were “insulting.”

The negative reaction from Ghanaians forced The Sun to correct the statement by replacing the “poverty-stricken” phrase with “humble”.

The Mirror and Daily Mail, however, have still not changed their headlines at the time of writing.

Thomas Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day (October 5, 2020) after the Gunners triggered the midfielder’s £45 million release clause.
