President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has approved for an amount of US$45,000 to be paid to Ghana’s boxing legend David Kotei, popularly known by his ring name, D.K Poison.

This was disclosed in a letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo Asante.

“With reference to your letter No. VF.89/215/01E dated 17th June 2020, I write to convey the approval of the President of the Republic for an amount for Forty-Five Thousand United States Dollars (US$45,000.00) to be paid to Mr David Kotei (a.k.a D.K. Poison) on compassionate grounds,” the letter stated.

The letter also requested the Ministry of Finance to “take the necessary action” to ensure that the money is paid to D.K Poison.

This directive from President Akufo-Addo comes in the wake a petition that D.K Poison and his lawyers sent to the Presidency asking that he be paid the amount of $45,000 which he loaned to the state of Ghana over four decades ago.

D.K Poison, who became Ghana’s first world boxing champion on September 20, 1975, loaned the Ignatius Kutu Acheampong-led administration an amount of $45,000 (GHC260,141.36 now) from the money he earned after defending his title against Japan’s Fuku Yama in 1976, to purchase canned mackerel to mitigate the harsh conditions the country was facing then.

However, shortly after the canned mackerels arrived in Ghana, Acheampong’s regime was overthrown by the Jerry Rawlings’ coup. Acheampong was subsequently executed by the new military regime, and since then, the D.K Poison has been chasing his money.

It is great that President Akufo-Addo has taken action on this to ensure that the boxing legend gets his money.
