Let’s Get You Hired: Why You May Be Having Trouble Landing A Job

Good day, job seeker! Can you believe that it’s October already? If you have recently lost a job or you’ve been looking for a job this whole time, then the past few months can’t have been easy for you. Let’s try and turn things around. We’re back today with another issue of Let’s Get You Hired to revamp your job search efforts.

The expert for this week’s issue is Kwame Beny Smith, a Human Resource Professional with years of experience in the field. This week, Kwame Beny Smith helps us prepare for the job hunt.

However, first of all, we need to look at why you may be having trouble landing a job. That is, why you are not getting calls back after submitting your CV or why you aren’t getting called back after interviews.

Poor Preparation On Your Part

It is fact that most graduates waited until they had graduated from the university to start job hunting. In fact, a lot wait past thatthey wait until they have finished their national service to start job searching. According to Kwame Bene Smith, you don’t have to wait until you have your degree to start the job hunt. From his experience, it is best to start job hunting 3 to six months before you even graduate from school. During that period of time, you need to start contacting companies.

In Kwame’s words you need to expose yourself. When you start contacting companies, it gives you the opportunity to start building your contact list. And if you network right, all the while putting yourself out there professionally you might even get a chance to spend your year of service at one of those companies.

Still in the vein of poor preparation, another thing that prevents graduates from quickly landing a role is that they do not prepare their CVs early enough. In Kwame’s words, most people wait until they have an opportunity before they begin to prepare their CVs to apply for the role. Kwame’s advice for young people is to start building your CV right from your very first internship. Whenever you are exposed to something new; be it a new piece of software, a new way of performing a task or anything of the sort, you need to write it down. Make sure that it goes on your CV.

Remember, CVs should be continually developed as and when you gain any new experiences.

Not Knowing What To Look For In A Job

Graduates usually come out of school not knowing what opportunities are available for them with respect to their area of study. They don’t know what industry they want to work in, and they have no ideas what companies are in that industry. In a previous issue of Let’s Get You Hired, we featured Charles Wartemberg. Charles is a Ghanaian who is currently employed at Microsoft as Senior Product Manager. And in that issue, Charles emphasized that not everyone who works at a tech company codes.

It’s the same way that not everyone who works at a mining company is is an expert on mining. In every company, there are departments that work to support the company’s main vehicle. For example, Kwame Bene Smith mentions departments like the Sustainability Department, or positions like Stakeholder Engagement Officer. These are all jobs that someone with a social science degree could do.

To fix that gap in knowledge of all the possible jobs that you can do with your degree, there is something that you can do. Kwame Bene Smith advises that you window shop for jobs even when you’re in school. That is, go on job sites and job platforms. See what kind of jobs are posted on those platforms. And even if you’re not applying for any of those jobs, you get to see the kinds of opportunities that are available to you.

It is also important to note that your major in the university doesn’t define what job you’re going to end up doing.

Lack Of Work Experience

One of the biggest paradoxes when it comes to looking for a job is the lack of work experience. Employers won’t hire you if you don’t have work experience. And you can’t get work experience if employers won’t hire you. Or can you? According to Kwame Bene Smith, you can gain experience even while you’re in school through internships, volunteering activities or even while working on projects.

Kwame Bene Smith even sites a survey that shows that employers will choose a candidate with internship experience. That is, in a situation where candidates are otherwise evenly matched.

You need to look for ways to get the experience that you want. Ideally, you should be able to walk into a full time position that pays well. However, if there’s no such position available to you, do the next best thing. The next best thing being, part-time internships, volunteering or working on projects. Those things don’t necessarily pay, at least not in cash, anyway. You will gain experience that will be invaluable on your CV.
